A clearinghouse for information, analysis, and resources related to state sanctioned violence in the United States
Lee Fang, from The Intercept, reports that police unions in Maryland have defeated all reform bills proposed by the legislature, and describes the state as having “extraordinarily cop-friendly laws.”
The Baltimore Fraternal Order of Police alone has donated $1.8 million to elected officials throughout the state. The group employs professional lobbyists and uses social media to organize lobbying delegations composed of law enforcement personnel. Police forces are currently being expanded in Maryland, and private prison companies have begun contracting for inmate labor; according to the ACLU, more than 100 people have died at the hands of police officers since 2010.
